It’s my great pleasure to introduce artist, Darren White from Peregian Beach, Queensland.
Darren is a contemporary painter, capturing the Australian landscape through his easy-going lens of nostalgia and emotion. His paintings are collected by those seeking the chilled out vibes of a road-trip holiday.
Working purely from memory, rather than from photos or real life, Darren allows the extraneous details of the landscape to fall away focusing his attention on the story of a place and moment. The landscapes are simplified, partly abstracted, balanced and soothing.

It was warm just this morning but the change so quick and aggressive has made for a sunset show that hits everything so poetically. The tent walls will be dripping with condensation come the morning, it’ll be hard to pull ourselves up and out to get the fire roaring again.
Reflection is a painting that speaks back to a quintessential riverside camping trip right at the end of summer, when the cool days begin to hit with a harsh and beautiful snap.

It rips through there, the bank where the trees are nestled—the river is going to wash the trees away, eventually. For now, the cluster of evergreens makes for the best place to sit and watch it all; so alive, so powerful, so grounding… This is the spot I come back to.

The whole drive home, my sun and wind-burned eyes peer out the car windows gazing at the hills, picturing them as mini versions of themselves and covered in snow. It’s as though the mountain didn’t have enough fun features, or perhaps it’s that the adrenaline hasn’t worn off yet, dropping these tired limbs into a solid car nap.
Weird how the downtime after a day snowboarding, on the long drive home, is when everything is heightened—the indicator so loud, the sunset so powerful, the darkness so black. The weirdest part is, I feel like I remember those drives almost more than the time on the ski field.
