Neil Tomkins: The Roaming Painter

The Roaming Painter

Travel has always been an important and regular part of Neil Tomkins’ art practice. A modern day art gypsy he has roamed the backstreets and hills of outback Australia, Tasmania, Portugal and Peru, sketching, photographing and contemplating.

In 2018, Neil was invited for a residency in Portugal to work in collaboration with film maker and poet Yuri Nezovič.

Three of his Portugal paintings are now available exclusively through Sarah Birtles Art + Advice along with a fourth work from Newport, Sydney.

Despite not being able to travel, last year was an incredible year for Neil, receiving critical acclaim as an Archibald finalist and furthering his commercial success with unprecedented sales of over 30 paintings.

“I’m a traveling painter. So I’ve grown pretty accustomed to being in different places. Just being connected to the land and seeing how different people interact with their homes and the town itself. I find quite interesting.”
