The Singer sewing machine transformed the lives of women, allowing them to make clothes for their families more quickly and easily, and giving them more time to learn new skills. The women could make and mend clothing in hours, when it would previously have taken them days.

The Singer sewing machine was developed and patented in 1846 by Isaac Merritt Singer, an eccentric actor and entrepreneur, whose interest in the lives of women included fathering at least 24 children by a number of them. He was known as volatile and as a scallywag. This model, the 28K, has a gorgeous engraved front and was produced in 1929.

The background is adapted from a Turn-of-the Century pattern, English, 1895-1910. Designer unknown.
