About The Artwork
Created for Sarah Birtles Art + Advice, for the 2024 Affordable Art Fair Singapore, these carved and painted wood blocks by the artist, Kean Onn See, were inspired during a visit to Penang, Malaysia.

Drawn, carved and painted on woodblock, the Central Courtyard Series is based on and around the central courtyards of UNESCO World Heritage buildings Cheong Fatt Tze Mansion and Pinang Peranakan Mansion.

Both mansions were built around the 1890s. They were laid out using architectural styles of the Imperial Period, with European features such as louvred windows, Scottish cast iron balustrades, and Stoke-on-Trent (England) ceramic floor tiles, incorporating Chinese elements such as carved wooden panels and screens.

The three panels were created together as a whole. Each panel stands alone also, to reflect the characteristics of Peranakan architecture of the late 19th century
